Log Cabin Blog Hop with Island Batik -Beach Comber

2 - Log Cabin Blog Hop

This is the 3rd day of the second week of the Log Cabin Island Batik Blog Hop showing all the new fabric lines.  Isn’t this fabric beautiful!  It’s called Jewel Box, but I can’t help but see the Emerald Coast here in North Florida.  “Jewel Box”  is designed by Kathy Engle for Linda and Carl Sullivan of Colourwerx.

I wanted to try a Curvy Log Cabin block.  I cut Log Cabin strips 2″ and 1 1/4″ for a finished size of 1.5″ and 3/4″ and  strip pieced my blocks.  I used the Schmetz Chrome Microtex needles for the piecing.  They are perfect for the batik fabrics.  I also used Aurifil thread for both the piecing and the quilting of Beach Comber.

I like to check my block as I’m going along with Studio 180 Design Tucker Trimmers to be sure my block is square.   In a Log Cabin block you have those odd 1/4″ sizes for some of your blocks.  I  used my Tucker Trimmer II for those units; it’s made for 1/4″ blocks.

A couple of tips I picked up for good results making Log Cabin blocks:

  • Cut your strips on the lengthwise grain, (there is less stretch for a better result)
  • Precut your strips to the correct length (rather than sewing on a strip and cutting it to off ).  It helps to keep your block size accurate.

My original design was done on EQ8.  I used 32 blocks with the colored fabric being the wide strip and four blocks made the opposite way.  Then I  played on my design wall to make sure it’s what I liked.  There are so many possibilities with the Log Cabin blocks!IMG_2035

I chose to quilt using three of the Aurifil  colors (#2520, #2545 and #2105) given to me. They blended beautifully with”Jewel Box”.  I also use Schmetz  needles for quilting on my long arm.

  2. So lovely! As you already noted, I saw water too when I looked at the Jewel Box collection. Love the colors so much! I also love the look of feathers in the blocks, having used that myself. We must be twinsies! I’ve had so much fun sharing this day with you. Can’t wait for the next IB blog hop.
